HARMONISE, short for Hierarchical and Agile Resource Management Optimization for Networks in Smart Energy Communities, is a Horizon Europe project dedicated to creating smarter, more flexible, and more sustainable energy systems. At the heart of this mission are the project’s pilot sites, real-world communities that are helping test, validate, and demonstrate the technologies and strategies that will shape the future of energy.

Estonia: Advancing Smart Energy Management

The Estonian pilot focuses on integrating renewable energy generation and advanced energy data management into local communities. By exploring smarter ways to collect, analyse, and optimise energy data, the pilot demonstrates how digitalisation can support more efficient energy sharing and consumption. This pilot plays a key role in showing how communities can use intelligent systems to improve decision-making, reduce waste, and maximise renewable energy usage.

Spain: Empowering Rural Energy Communities

Located in Pozo Lorente, Spain, this pilot demonstrates how rural communities can actively participate in the energy transition. With its residential buildings and local energy infrastructure, the pilot explores how small communities can become more energy independent and sustainable. The Spanish pilot highlights the importance of flexibility, citizen engagement, and renewable integration in rural areas, proving that innovation is not limited to large cities.

Italy: Building Sustainable Local Ecosystems

The Italian pilot focuses on creating efficient and collaborative energy ecosystems. By integrating renewable resources, local energy management strategies, and smart technologies, the pilot explores how communities can optimise energy flows while reducing environmental impact. This pilot showcases how cooperation between citizens, technology providers, and local stakeholders can accelerate the transition toward cleaner energy systems.

Switzerland: Enhancing Energy Flexibility and Resilience

The Swiss pilot demonstrates how advanced energy coordination can improve grid stability and resilience. As energy systems become increasingly decentralised, flexibility becomes essential. Through innovative management approaches and real-time optimisation, the Swiss pilot supports the development of more adaptive energy networks capable of responding to changing demands and renewable generation patterns.

In addition to the physical pilots, HARMONISE includes a virtual pilot known as the Supernova Grid. This digital environment allows researchers and partners to simulate future energy scenarios, test optimisation strategies, and evaluate system-wide impacts in a controlled setting. The virtual pilot strengthens the project’s ability to scale innovations beyond local demonstrations and supports the development of future-ready energy solutions.
