🔋 Empowering Communities Through Innovation

The HARMONISE Approach to Energy-Positive Districts

The shift toward climate neutrality is no longer a distant ambition—it’s a present-day necessity. At the heart of this transformation lies a powerful idea: Positive Energy Districts (PEDs). The HARMONISE project, funded under the Horizon Europe programme, is taking this idea and turning it into a living reality across European cities.
But what makes HARMONISE different? The answer lies in its commitment to people-powered innovation.

From Energy Consumers to Energy Citizens

In the traditional energy model, citizens play a passive role—paying bills and using power with little say in the system’s operation. HARMONISE is changing that.
By integrating intuitive digital tools, real-time data, and interactive platforms, the project empowers individuals, buildings, and communities to actively participate in energy generation, consumption, and trading.

Highlights include:

A gamified mobile app that promotes energy-saving habits
Personalized dashboards that help households track their consumption
Local energy trading via blockchain-based smart contracts

The goal is simple but revolutionary: to make every citizen an active stakeholder in the clean energy transition.

Interoperability & Flexibility: Built for Tomorrow

One of HARMONISE’s most valuable contributions is its open, modular architecture that ensures interoperability between systems, devices, and districts. This means cities aren’t locked into single-vendor ecosystems—they can build, upgrade, and scale with flexibility.

The solution suite includes:

🔹 A Decision Support System (DSS) for municipalities and energy providers
🔹 Forecasting tools for energy consumption and flexibility potential
🔹 A co-simulation environment to predict performance at building and district levels

These tools are tailored, scalable, and replicable making them suitable for a wide range of urban environments.

🌍 Five Pilots, One Vision

HARMONISE will be tested across five demonstration sites (four physical, one digital), each reflecting unique geographical, socio-economic, and infrastructural conditions. This ensures the solutions are robust, adaptable, and ready for wider replication across Europe.

Each pilot will explore specific challenges such as:

🏙️ Multi-use buildings and mixed energy sources
🏘️ Citizen engagement and behavioral change
💼 Integration with city-wide planning tools

Real Impact. Real Business. Real Europe.

HARMONISE is not just about technology—it’s about creating viable business models, supporting EU climate policies, and laying the foundation for a truly interconnected European energy ecosystem.

Through its dynamic combination of digital infrastructure, citizen participation, and market innovation, the project is helping Europe reach a future where every district is not only smart—but positive.

🚀 Be Part of the Change

HARMONISE is building more than energy-positive districts—it’s building an energy-positive Europe. Stay tuned as we share more updates from our pilots, tools, and communities.
